Madison Points of Interest
Madison Museum of Contemporary Art - One of the city's oldest cultural organizations, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art traces its origins to the Madison Art Association, which was formed by a group of artists and art enthusiasts in 1901. In 1969, the Association merged with the Madison Art Foundation and shortly thereafter achieved accreditation from the American Association of Museums under the name Madison Art Center. The Art Center operated in the former Lincoln School on East Gorham Street until 1980, when the museum moved into its current location. In September 2003, the Art Center unveiled updated plans for a new Cesar Pelli-designed facility, scheduled to open in early 2006 as part of the Overture Center for the Arts. To mark this new chapter in the organization's rich history, the Madison Art Center was renamed the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.
Madison Ballet - Founded in 1981 as the Wisconsin Dance Ensemble, the organization was known for many years solely for its presentation of the timeless holiday favorite, The Nutcracker. The production provided invaluable performing opportunities for area dancers and gave the community the beauty of ballet without having to leave town. Performances took place in the Madison Civic Center and live accompaniment by the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and Madison Youth Choirs was added over time. In December 2005, over 12,000 people attended performances of The Nutcracker.
Madison Opera - The Opera is now considered to be among the top regional companies in the US, producing two major operas annually, a free operatic event in the
summer, and plans for expanding its season in the future. The production history boasts an amazing breadth of repertoire, including a commissioned world premiere in 1993 and a co-commission Midwest premiere in 2005. Madison Opera now regularly presents singers known throughout the world's leading opera houses.
Madison Symphany Orchestra - The 2005-2006 season marks the Madison Symphony Orchestra's 80th season as the area's premier classical music ensemble, and Maestro John DeMain's 12th season as Music Director.
